Lambretta Tool, final drive (puller) pulling sleeve, MB

MRB0252K

It is important when fitting the layshaft and checking the tolerances in the gearbox, that the layshaft is pulled all the way into the rear hub bearing, as far as it will go.

One way is to use a copper/alloy hammer, then fit the rear hub and tighten it up but this can be difficult on the workbench.

As an alternative Mark Broadhurst came up with this sleeve design.

Offer the layshaft into the bearing, fit the sleeve locating the allen screw in the layshaft grooves, fit the special nut provided, hold the sleeve with a spanner and tighten the nut until the layshaft is drawn into position, when it locks up remove the sleeve turn it around and retighten up, Once it locks but the sleeve is loose, undo the nut and turn it around, finally tightening the nut solid.

Ideal to fit the layshaft and keep it tight so the gearbox can be shimmed up correctly.

TIP use some grease on the threads.

Intended to fit layshaft myself and bought the tool, didn't do it in the end but got a we'll know local Lambretta man to do it for me, he's been fitting layshafts for years, decades even. I provided him the MB layshaft and loaned him the puller. He never used one before and after he said can I keep the puller ? That says it all really! Bought an Indian Import about a year ago and took it to get a wobbly wheel looked at, anyway £2000 spent scooter running well but wobbly wheel is back. The only part that wasn't changed was the layshaft. Ordered a new MB one which is now fitted and no more wobbly wheel. The biggest thing I got out of this is knowing a really good piece of engineering is providing a safe and effective drive to the wobble free rear wheel. If you're stripping your engine down fit one and be safe don't wait for it to fail.

This is a cracking tool that makes it very easy to pull in the layshaft correctly and hold it there to set up your gearbox. A clever idea thats easy to use. High quality, as you would expect with MB tools

Steve on 25 Sep 2019 asked "What size spanner to hold it in place while the socket pulls it tight?"
