Lambretta Stud stepped repair 8/6mm - 17x10x11mm, crankcase side, stainless steel, MB

MBP0302

A really simple idea from Mark Broadhurst

This Stainless Steel steppped stud can repair all the crankcase side 6mm threads that usually pulls outs.

Most people dont have a Heicoil or Timesert kit as they are expensive, this is a cheaper repair.

All you need is a drill, 6.5 or 7mm drill bit and a 8 x 1.25mm tap which most have or can borrow.

Drill out the hole, tap down to slightly shorter than the measurement of the 8mm end and screw in the stud by locking two 6mm nuts together, tap it a bit at a time so when its home tight the flat edge is flush with the gasket face.

On final fitting use loctite, a cheap quality method of repairing old threads.

We used 8mm in the casing as this can also repair some threads already repaired which have also gone wrong in the past.

Paul H on 09 Oct 2021 asked "Would this be a suitable repair to replace normal stud that secures exhaust tail pipe. Just wondering about o/a length as i know you do extra long standard studs for this. Or maybe you do extra long stepped studs for this purpose? Thanks in advance."

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Try either of these MBP0278 or MBP0395

Rob on 22 May 2018 asked "I have an early series 2 engine where it has 6mm studs all around including the 2 which exhaust brackets bolt too. My question can I use these in reverse so I have the 8mm part of the stud exposed so I can use a bigger nut and washer to hold bracket or is that just a stupid idea. I would tap out the cases but there’s not enough meat there to take a bigger stud, thanks"

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Its not the way to do it, you can tap and tap the threads to 7mm which is better than 6mm but not as good as 8mm. The only way to do it correctly is weld and convert to 8mm
