The nuts and washers are steel to be stronger.

This kit was the perfect solution to the worry I had about the old studs & casing threads being weak, I had to tap out the casing beyond the original depth (may have just been crud) but once the deeper studs were in place the end plate tightened down without the feeling that the threads would give way.
